Mounting-basis decision

Inside vs Outside Mount Roller Shades: A Project Selection Guide

Choose the mounting reference before approving a roller-shade size. Inside or reveal mounting plans the assembly relative to the window opening or reveal. Outside or face mounting plans it relative to a wall, frame face or surrounding surface.

Neither label confirms a fixing method, a finished shade dimension or whether a selected system fits. For dealers, designers, installers and project buyers, the useful decision is which reference suits the opening and what must be resolved before the quotation is released.

Compare the two mounting bases

Use this table to describe the proposed condition on a drawing. It is a pre-order decision aid, not an installation instruction or a dimensional rule.

Review item Inside / reveal mount Outside / face mount
Mounting reference Identify the opening/reveal faces to which the proposed assembly relates Identify the wall, frame face or other surrounding surface used as the reference
Available opening condition Review the actual reveal shape, finish and space available for the selected assembly Review the surrounding surface, desired position and conflicts beyond the opening
Frame, handle and obstruction review Show frame projections and the movement of handles or opening sashes Show what the projected assembly and fabric path may pass in front of
Visual coverage objective Review how the assembly sits within the opening and what remains visible Review the intended coverage beyond the opening and its relationship to trim and adjacent finishes
Edge/light-control question Identify the expected relationship among opening, hardware and fabric edges Identify the requested overlap/coverage and remaining light paths without assuming a blackout result
Projection and clearance Obtain the selected assembly’s documented envelope and compare it with the reveal Obtain the selected assembly’s documented envelope and compare it with nearby surfaces and movement paths
Access and service Confirm how the selected assembly can be reached without relying on the mounting label alone Confirm access to the selected assembly and any conflicts with finishes, furniture or adjoining systems
Drawing information Opening references, finished reveal condition, section and relevant obstruction views Reference surface, coverage intent, projection, section and surrounding constraints
Final confirmation Named project parties confirm the actual condition and selected-system suitability before release Named project parties confirm the actual condition and selected-system suitability before release

When inside mounting may be considered

Inside mounting may be worth reviewing when the design intends the shade to sit within the opening and the frame or reveal is to remain part of the visible composition. Start by showing the actual finished condition, not only a rough opening width.

Check whether handles, mullions, opening sashes or uneven finishes affect the proposed assembly and fabric travel. The selected shade’s brackets, cassette or exposed roll, drive side and access needs must be compared with that condition.

There is no universal minimum reveal depth or bracket clearance in this guide. “Inside mount” does not mean that every roller-shade assembly fits the available space. If the selected assembly’s information is missing, keep suitability open rather than treating a neat-looking sketch as approval.

When outside mounting may be considered

Outside mounting may be worth reviewing when the design uses the frame face or surrounding surface as its reference, or when the intended visual coverage extends beyond the opening. Mark the proposed position and coverage on an elevation and section so everyone is discussing the same arrangement.

Review adjacent trim, ceiling conditions, handles and the projected fabric path. A face-mounted shade can still conflict with an obstruction or leave an unresolved edge condition. The drawing must identify the actual mounting surface and who is responsible for confirming it.

Extending coverage beyond an opening does not by itself guarantee complete blackout. No universal overlap, projection or fixing instruction is specified here.

Keep mounting choice separate from the blackout question

Mounting basis can affect how the shade relates to the opening, but the finished light-control result depends on the selected fabric and the complete edge, head and bottom conditions. Inside versus outside mount is one input, not a performance rating.

State the required room-darkening condition before selection. If channels or a particular headbox arrangement are being considered, record that as a separate selected-system review instead of assuming it follows from the mounting label.

For an already installed shade with unwanted edge light, use the existing Light-Gap Evidence Review. That guide investigates installed conditions; this page helps select the mounting basis before quotation.

Review obstructions and building interfaces

Photograph the opening from the front and from useful side angles. Show the relevant context, not just a tightly cropped rectangle. A section or annotated sketch can make a conflict clearer than another nominal dimension.

  • Handles and opening parts: show their positions and the movement that must remain possible.
  • Frame projections and mullions: identify how they relate to the proposed assembly and fabric path.
  • Ceiling conditions: show changes in level or nearby features that affect the proposed position.
  • Adjacent finishes: record trim, cladding or furniture interfaces that need coordination.
  • Access: identify who reviews the ability to reach and service the selected assembly.

These are information requests. They do not specify anchors, substrate capacity, structural loads or an installation sequence. Final fixing location and method belong to the appointed project professionals and installer using the selected-system documentation.

Where a concealed condition is proposed, refer to Service Access Planning. This mounting comparison does not design a recessed ceiling pocket or establish a removal clearance.

Record the decision before comparing quotation dimensions

Keep the preferred mounting reference, its drawing revision and unresolved conditions with the opening ID. Then ask the supplier to state what the quoted dimension describes: the opening, the finished assembly or another explicitly defined reference.

Do not make a deduction from a dimension merely because the request says “inside mount.” Any allowance must have a selected-system basis and a named approving party. Use the existing Opening-to-Quotation Dimension Reconciliation resource for comparing the actual measurement and quotation records.

Decision stage Record to keep What remains open until confirmed
Preferred mounting basis Inside/reveal or outside/face, with the reference surfaces identified Whether the selected assembly suits the actual condition
Drawing review Opening ID, section/elevation, finishes and obstructions Exact assembly envelope, fixing responsibility and access questions
Quotation review Defined dimension basis and selected configuration Any project-specific allowance and the final approved size
Release Named approval, document revision and remaining exceptions Unresolved items must not be treated as blanket approval

What to send for project review

  • Opening width and height, with units and the measurement reference identified.
  • Frame/reveal photographs and a section or detail if available.
  • Preferred mounting basis and the visual coverage objective.
  • Handles, projections, mullions, ceiling or adjacent-finish constraints.
  • Fabric objective and any room-darkening or privacy requirement.
  • Quantity, requested controls, project stage and destination.
  • The person responsible for confirming site conditions and final fixing information.

The Roller Shade Technical Pack can help assemble the wider product request. Keep the mounting preference clearly marked as proposed or confirmed.

Questions before ordering

Is inside mount always the cleaner-looking option?

That depends on the actual reveal, selected hardware, finish and viewing position. Compare the proposed arrangement against the design intent rather than treating the mounting name as an aesthetic guarantee.

Does outside mount provide complete blackout?

No guarantee follows from the mounting basis. Review fabric, coverage, hardware and the complete opening against the project’s stated darkening requirement.

Is there a universal deduction for inside-mount roller shades?

No universal deduction is provided here. Keep the size definitions explicit and obtain any allowance for the exact selected system before approving the quotation.

Who confirms the final fixing location?

The project must name the parties responsible for the site condition, selected assembly, substrate and installation method. A supplier’s configuration review does not replace structural, electrical or site approval by the appointed professionals.

Project decisions remain tied to the selected configuration, documented requirements and appointed reviewers.
