Reading Shade-Motor IP Ratings Without Assuming System Suitability

An IP marking belongs to identified equipment and its specified enclosure. It does not automatically describe every connector, power supply, controller or completed shade around it. Start an environmental review by drawing that boundary.

Identify the rated item before comparing the number

IEC 60529 concerns degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment. A shade specification therefore needs to identify which enclosure or component a quoted rating describes. A motor label, an installation drawing and a complete assembled-system declaration are different records.

Record the exact model, document revision and rated item. If a quotation lists only “IP44,” return it with a question: does this refer to the motor, a connector, a control enclosure or the complete supplied assembly? Ask for the supporting document rather than extending the label by implication.

Three motor references in the published Saiwenna data

Named motor Published reference Keep attached to the value
CM-51-E IP40 in CC-B112 v1.0, p.2 The identified curtain motor and its documented conditions
CM-50-E-R IP20 in RC-MB10 v1.0, p.2 The identified 24 V DC motor; original manufacturer use instructions remain relevant
CM-10-QC IP44 in RC-MB10 v1.0, p.2 The identified 230 V AC / 50 Hz motor; this is not a rating for the other motor or an entire shade system

These are documented reference entries, not independent certification test results produced by Saiwenna. They do not establish a current supply configuration, an approved outdoor installation or interchangeability between motors.

The CM-50-E-R original user-manual wording, “Indoor and household use only,” is retained. A proposed business application does not rewrite that restriction. The complete power path, selected control equipment and destination requirements still need review.

Draw the boundary around every exposed part

On a simple system sketch, identify the motor body, cable exit, connector or junction, power conversion equipment, local controller and any enclosure supplied by the project. For each item, record the manufacturer’s applicable environmental information and installation conditions. A documented rating on one item does not fill the evidence fields for the others.

Also describe the space. A protected interior pocket, a damp room, an area subject to cleaning spray and an exterior façade present different questions. State whether condensation, direct water exposure, dust, cleaning agents, temperature extremes or service access are relevant. Ask for applicable limits and installation requirements; do not convert a general room label into a suitability conclusion.

This record is a brief for the selected-equipment supplier and responsible local electrical professional. It is not a method for designing an enclosure or upgrading an existing rating by adding an improvised cover.

Use a component-to-environment evidence register

Project condition
Opening/zone ______ Indoor/exterior location ______ Expected exposures ______
Motor
Model ______ Rated item ______ IP/source/revision ______ Use restrictions ______
Connections
Cable exit, connector and junction identity ______ Installation evidence ______
Power and controls
Exact equipment ______ Environmental limits ______ Installation owner ______
System review
Complete assembly document, if available ______ Unverified interfaces ______
Decision
Accepted scope ______ Conditions still open ______ Responsible reviewer ______

If any key item remains unidentified, keep the environmental decision open. Changing a motor, connector or enclosure later should reopen the affected portion of this record.

Connect the environment decision to procurement

Carry the accepted component identities into the revision register. Coordinate power architecture with the central versus local power guide. Neither document supplies a universal weatherproofing or certification approval.

Submit the equipment and environment brief For a roller configuration, include the selected shade-system references so the motor rating is reviewed with the surrounding assembly.

Reviewed 20 October 2026. Named manufacturer examples retain their own applicability. Supply scope and project acceptance require the selected equipment and responsible review.
