Reviewing a Shade-Fabric Fire-Test Report Before Specification
“Fire retardant” in a fabric description is not a complete report. A useful submittal connects the exact material being proposed with the test record and the project requirement. This worksheet helps a buyer identify missing evidence before an approval decision.

Start with the project requirement, then read the report
Record who specified the required test or classification, the applicable edition and the intended material use. If the project requirement is unclear, resolve it with the responsible design or code-review professional. A supplier should not select a convenient test name and treat that choice as the project’s requirement.
NFPA 701 is titled Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films. CAN/ULC 109 is a separate standard addressing flame tests of flame-resistant fabrics and films. Similar subject matter does not make the reports automatically interchangeable. This guide does not determine which standard, test method or edition a jurisdiction or project requires.
The six links an evidence package needs
- Proposed fabric identity. Manufacturer, collection, exact code and color, construction, coating or backing, and any relevant finish or treatment. A collection name alone may not identify the tested material.
- Document identity. Issuing laboratory or organization, report number, issue date, revision and complete report pages. A cropped certificate image can hide qualifications or specimen details.
- Test identity. Standard designation, edition, method or procedure and reported result. Keep a test report separate from a marketing label or a declaration with a different scope.
- Specimen identity and conditions. What material or assembly was tested, how it was prepared and what conditioning or treatment is recorded. Do not substitute a different backing or construction without reviewing applicability.
- Proposed-use match. Identify the installation or material use being proposed and any report exclusions. The responsible reviewer decides whether the evidence answers the project requirement.
- Supply continuity. Connect the accepted material identity to the order and change-control record. A later substitution needs review against the accepted evidence.
Disposition: accept the record for review, return it or keep it open
| What arrives | Useful next action | Avoid concluding |
|---|---|---|
| A fabric brochure with a standard logo | Request the applicable complete report and exact material match | That the logo certifies the ordered shade |
| A report for a different collection or backing | Ask the supplier and reviewer to resolve the identity difference | That similar appearance means equivalent test evidence |
| A complete matching report with a different standard from the brief | Refer the difference to the project’s responsible reviewer | That one standard automatically replaces another |
| A matching report and a later material substitution | Reopen the material evidence and approval record | That the earlier approval covers every repeat order |

Keep material testing separate from system evidence
A fabric flame-test report does not establish motor electrical certification, complete-shade certification, installation approval or a warranty for the assembled system. No complete-system UL/ETL/FCC certification is established by this worksheet, and no unverified Saiwenna fabric test result is claimed.
Use the submittal and deviation workflow to record a project decision, and the revision register for later changes. Keep optical selection in the fabric selection guide; it answers a different performance question.
Prepare the fabric evidence and sample brief Ask which material and supporting documents can actually be provided for the selected request. Price, availability and lead time remain subject to confirmation.
