Controls comparison

KNX vs RS485 vs Dry Contact for Motorized Blinds

These are different layers of a building-control design. KNX is a building automation ecosystem, RS485 is a wired communications layer used by specific motor protocols, and dry contact is a simple relay interface.

Quick comparison

Option What it is Typical use Programming owner Feedback
KNX Building automation bus and ecosystem Villas, hotels and commercial automation KNX integrator Depends on actuator/gateway and motor interface
RS485 Wired serial communication used by a defined motor protocol Addressed room, zone or BMS control Integrator or controller supplier Only where the selected protocol supports and exposes it
Dry contact Isolated relay input for commands Simple BMS triggers, key switches and relay panels Electrical or controls contractor Not inherent; separate feedback hardware may be needed
Do not select by protocol name alone. Confirm motor model, wiring, command list, feedback, gateway and commissioning responsibility.

How to choose by project

KNX villa or hotel

Use a documented actuator or gateway path. The KNX integrator defines group addresses, scenes and commissioning; the motor-side interface must be confirmed before ordering.

RS485 commercial project

Request the exact protocol, addressing rules, topology and command/feedback list. Test representative motors and the controller before bulk production where practical.

Dry-contact relay control

Best when open, close and stop commands are enough. Confirm pulse versus maintained input, electrical isolation and whether independent status feedback is required.

Questions before quotation

  • Which blinds or curtain tracks, sizes and quantities are controlled?
  • What motor voltage and wiring are available?
  • Who supplies the KNX actuator, RS485 controller or relay panel?
  • Which commands, groups, scenes and feedback points are required?
  • Who provides gateway programming, testing and final commissioning?
  • Is a sample or bench test required before the production order?

FAQ

Is KNX the same as RS485?

No. KNX is a building automation system. RS485 is an electrical communication layer used by many different protocols. A gateway or actuator may connect a motor interface to KNX.

Does dry contact provide blind position?

Not by itself. Dry-contact inputs normally trigger commands. Position or status feedback requires a supported motor/controller path and must be specified separately.

Can one motor support every option?

No assumption should be made. Available interfaces depend on the selected motor and project architecture; final compatibility must be confirmed before ordering.
