Interior vs Exterior Solar Shading: A Project Placement Guide

Mark the glazing line before choosing the shade. A room-side blind and an exterior shading system create different coordination questions, even when they serve the same window.

For architects, designers and project buyers, the first output is a recorded placement decision: where the shading is proposed, what it must do, and which interfaces still need review. Product, fabric, mounting and control selection follow that decision.

Placement is not mounting terminology. Here, interior and exterior mean the room side and outside of the building envelope. An inside-versus-outside mount choice instead compares reveal and face mounting; both may be indoors.

Two locations, different review boundaries

Room side

Record room use, view and privacy objectives, window movement, interior finishes and the route for reaching the assembly.

GLAZING / BUILDING INTERFACE

Exterior side

Record site exposure, the proposed exterior assembly, building interfaces and who reviews installation and maintenance access.

Conceptual placement map, not a section drawing or an approved system detail. No clearances, loads or performance values are represented.

Exterior shading places the shading element outside the glazing; interior shading places it within the room. This location difference is not a quantified heat, glare or energy result. Any performance target needs evidence for the selected shading, glazing and project conditions.

Compare the questions before comparing products

DecisionInterior positionExterior position
Room objectiveState the required view, daylight, privacy or room-darkening condition from the occupied space.State the objective at the same opening, including how the proposed exterior position relates to the room requirement.
ExposureRecord the actual indoor environment and any unusual exposure near an opening.Describe sun, rain, dust and other site exposure for the selected-system review; a product label is not an exposure approval.
Glazing and finishesShow frames, handles, opening parts, reveal finishes and the proposed fabric path.Show the facade or supporting-frame interface, opening movement and adjoining exterior features.
Service routeIdentify how the assembly and relevant components can be reached after interior finishes are complete.Identify who will reach, inspect and maintain the exterior assembly, and what access must be coordinated.
Power and operationRecord the power route, operating zones and requested commands without assuming a motor or protocol.Add the exterior equipment locations and project operating requirements; controls remain specific to the selected configuration.
Approval recordKeep the interior design, selected-system and installer decisions tied to the same opening revision. Also identify the party responsible for the exterior/building interface and any project-defined review requirements.

Use the unresolved constraint to choose the next review

  1. If the location is undecided: send the same window elevation and section for both options. Keep the requested room outcome constant so the review is about placement, not two unrelated briefs.
  2. If exterior access or the building interface is unresolved: name the responsible project party and keep that option provisional. Do not treat an interior product as an exterior substitute.
  3. If the room outcome is unclear: agree the view, privacy and daylight objectives before choosing fabric. The existing fabric openness and sample-selection guide addresses material evaluation, not approval for outdoor use.
  4. If both locations remain under consideration: keep separate option references, drawings and unresolved questions. Do not combine their assumptions into one quotation line.

Move into the appropriate product family

Interior window review

Use Motorized Roller Blinds for the indoor product and configuration discussion. A mounting position alone does not confirm the selected assembly.

Exterior vertical review

Use Outdoor Zip Screens where a guided exterior fabric system is being considered. Follow the outdoor specification checklist for its project inputs.

Pergolas and retractable roofs address overhead openings. If the project includes those, the existing outdoor structure comparison is the relevant next decision. They are not interchangeable alternatives to a vertical window shade.

Record who closes each question

  • Designer or architect: defines the intended placement, room objective, glazing context and coordinated drawing.
  • Selected-system supplier: identifies the applicable system information, configuration limits and evidence still required.
  • Appointed project specialists and installer: review the actual supporting interface, power, installation and access within their assigned scope.
  • Facilities or operating team: defines operating access, maintenance responsibility and the handover information it needs.

For a placement review, send opening IDs, an elevation and section, proposed location, room objectives, site-exposure notes, access questions, quantity, destination and the responsible reviewers.

Request a shading placement review

Keep the chosen side of the glazing and its drawing revision on the opening schedule. If the facade interface, access route or selected product changes, reopen that placement record before carrying the old assumptions into the next submission.
